Here is a video class right out of our membership library.
In this video I show you how to make your own Vellum Paper, as well as, show you a wonderful project using a few of my cherished memories.
Suggested Supplies
To make vellum: Printed page of anything that you would like to turn into vellum
Oil (this can be kitchen oil, baby oil etc.). paper towel, drying tool.
For the project, gather what you have. I used: a Substrate from an old journal to mount the items on, colored papers, a family picture and a copy of my daughters handwriting from a recipe card she wrote. Glue stick, matte medium, distress oxide.
This challenge is to show you how you can make your own D.I.Y Vellum. In the video I then take you on the journey as I use my vellum to create a project.
As you watch the video you will see that I keep trying to incorporate a red flower into the design...it tickles me how many times I tried. I felt that the color would add interest...but I found it only to be a distraction. Consider when you are creating a project...does what ever you are adding create a sense of UNITY? Or, does it become an element that stands-off by itself? A sense of UNITY is always the goal.
In this video I share with you the TRIAL & ERROR of arranging all the pieces. You can see that placing something is not always automatic. For me, I place it and then replace it in another location to get a sense of "everything working together". When you are first starting a project, you are simply placing art material in random areas...but as you progress you start to create a RYTHM which is important in maintaining continuity and the views attention.
This project is all about TELLING A STORY for me. That is why I am thinking of these three elements, Continuity, Flow, and Reason. Continuity...does it give a feeling that it belongs in the piece. Flow...will it add a sense of flow to the work of art, which will help keep the viewer's eye moving....flowing with interest to observe everything that is there. And finally Reason...how does it enhance or add to the story? This may seem like a lot to think about; however, these are NOT RULES. But, rather tools,....questions that one could ask themselves to help bring interest into the project.
YOU MAY BE SAYING, "THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS TO THINK ABOUT. " If you stopped and took note of all the little things you do to create your work, such as tearing paper... You would see that you are automatically doing unconsciously, or consciously things that follow the Rules of Design. You may not think of all these rules, however, you know what looks right you and that is the Call that you follow.
For me, I am always looking at the composition and how things work with each other. Is there a repeat in color, shapes, and so on.
Being around people who love Art is a gift... and a wonderful way to keep you in a creative flow.
