Color Palette Notebook

You have probably heard of an inspiration board.Ā  Typically it is aĀ cork-board where you can thumb tackĀ all the pictures that bring you inspiration.

Well let's take it a step further and create a notebook filled with these images, ANDĀ theĀ color palettes from those images.Ā  Ā Ā

You may be asking yourself, Why?

I have found for myself that the 2 most common challenges that keepĀ me from starting a project is...

1.Ā  Subject matter:Ā  what to put on the white page,

2.Ā  What colors to use.Ā

There areĀ soĀ many colors to choose from that it can be overwhelming at times.Ā  But, if you had several color palettes at your finger tips, you could quickly put together a color palette for your project by what the examples you have in your note book.Ā  Talk about saving time and brain power on trying to decide what colors to use for the next new project.

Below is a color palette I created fromĀ one of my inspiration boards.Ā  I divided it up into groupings of colors that I felt worked well with each other...and that appealed to me.

The Impact of Color

Color influences whether or not we fall in love with a piece of art.Ā  Artists have used color within their work to enhance a mood or send a message, either in a positive or negative way.

For example:Ā

  • In the early 1900's, Picasso sank into depression.Ā Ā It was during that time that he painted figures in blues to enhance sadness.
  • Van Gogh's choose to paint the agricultural workers, in "The Potato Eaters", in browns and greens.Ā  The purpose was to draw focus on their connection to the earth.Ā
  • To illustrate the peacefulness of a serene lake, one might use the hues of green as seen in many of Klimt's paintings.Ā Ā (to see an example, you can google his name or visit this publication:Ā https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2023/04/25/gustav-klimt-lake-landscape-sothebys-new-york-45m)

Ā

This color palette below was createdĀ from a vintage Christmas image that I had.

Ā

Notice the soft, muted tones complimented by the rich, deep shades of similar colors.

To enjoy art is to understand the making of art.Ā  Ā

Ā

Looking at other's work of art, studying the colors that were chosen, gives us a deeper understanding and improves the choices that we make.Ā Ā

Ā

In my classesĀ I like to talk about the type of lines, shapes and colors that we choose as we create our projects.Ā  Bringing these elements to the front of our mind...and thinking about them helps to improve ones artistic abilities.

Ā

A Color Palette can simplify the process

CreatingĀ a few color palettes simplifies the process andĀ helps us narrow down our choices.
